What’s Your Theme For 2010?
Post written by Daniel Richard. Follow me on Twitter.
Not everyone are comfortable starting their new year afresh. Many people I know are still in the midst of settling down and realizing the fact that it’s already the 2nd week of 2010.
A common question is usually brought up by friends around us.
They’ll ask “what’s your goals for the year” to “what have you planned for 2010″.
Those are good questions. However, I’m certain that there are people who could be intimidated by the thought of the words “plan” or “goals”. Not that they don’t have ideals or wants that they dare say out and go on achieving. It is the fear of speaking it out, to prevent the humiliation of failure in one or two of their list of goals that they made.
Maybe you belong to another group of people, who do not know where to start when asked about your goals, plans, and resolutions.
No worries. You’ll start growing in confidence when you acquire the knowledge and strategy on where you can start from.
Here’s how: set a theme for your year.
It can be as easy as a 1 word theme, or a 1-sentence “mission” like statement.
Your theme has got to be something that you hold dearly to.
Some examples that I’ve heard and seen others achieving for 2009 were:
- “Personal growth”
- “Become a small business owner”
- “Seeing peace around me”
- “Liberation”
And from there, align the things that you do in the year to the theme that you’ve set for yourself.
My theme for 2010: Expand. Living Your Best Life.
The theme that I’ve set for myself this year is as stated in the sub header: “Expand. Living Your Best Life” (feel free to adopt the same theme if you are comfortable with it).
Here’s what I did to align myself to the theme:
1. Became frugal
I’ve cut my bills down by 50%, went out less, and spend only on the things that I love.
2. Worked from home
I left my last job in end Nov 2009, was called “incompetent” by one of the senior person in the former workplace, and was re-hired as a freelancer—that means a huge dip in income. I only started working from home in the last week of December when I finally revealed the news of the quit to my family members.
3. Launched a 3rd online business
Since 1st Jan 2010, I’ve done and launched 3 online businesses (2 of them I’m having a 10% share, while the 3rd was created to expand my parent’s home business). The 2nd went profitable in 3 days. I’m now expanding and working on a 4th.
4. Became a minimalist
My re-definition of the word “best” is to be “stress-free”. That is part of being a minimalist. That is, doing the things that I love, spending time on stuff and places that I’d enjoy. In essence; focus on fulfillment.
It’s only the beginning
2010 is only into it’s 3rd week—it’s only the beginning.
While I’ve aligned my thoughts and actions to the theme that I had started, I hope that you too will take your step forward and come up with one that you can work on for this year.
Like how I wrote it as this post’s title, the same question applies to you now.
