The world is facing a financial crisis right now, but this is not exactly the right time to continue spending too much of our time worrying about that.

Here’s 7 anti-worry hacks that you can adopt and apply into your life to help you stay employable, excellent, and optimistic today.

1. Take more cab rides

That’s if you are a corporate star who gets to fly all over the world in the airplane, or if you own a limo and the cost to maintain it is higher than taking the cab to travel between places.

In other words, it’s okay to downgrade to something more affordable rather than spending too much cash on something that gets your money flying out of your wallet like there’s no tomorrow.

2. Read more books

Have a good habit of reading books, especially on the ones related to your profession. Not only you will increase in knowledge, you too will stay employable in your company with related skill sets.

By the way you don’t have to exactly buy any books to read and learn from. There’s this useful place called the library. Just remember to return the books once you finished reading them or when you are about to reach the date due.

3. Go jogging, running, swimming…

The last thing you would want to do is to fall sick in this current financial situation. Keep yourself fit by picking up a new sport to play, or head to the gym to sweat it out.

If you are into running marathons, go ahead and join them! Finishing the run in the top 100 position is an achievement which will complement your skills in the workplace.

4. Start blogging

Probably this guy had just be retrenched from his job and is on the hunt for a new one which can be made into a career in the long run. Apart from him, there are thousands more who had suffered the unfortunate news of being “downsized” or “restructuring”. He can start blogging about the experience without a job while making new friends over on the net who is in the same situation as him.

There’s a huge community out there who even without a job can be very optimistic on landing themselves into a new one, and their positive thinking can affect the blog writer and other people in that community through encouragement and sharing their experiences from the days without work to do.

5. Be self-employed

This is one of the best time to be self-employed. If you are worried about being “laid off” from your current job, feel free to join in the ranks of the over achievers by putting your talents and skills into getting projects done.

Even if there’s a financial crisis going on and companies would definitely get affected, they too have to continue on with getting their products on the mainstream media (or social media), gaining publicity, doing up the sales, and training their staff. You can help solve their needs as a freelancer, consultant, or as a self-employed worker.

There’s bound to be demand for jobs to be done, this too is when you step into the picture to win the bid for the project, and do it with excellence!

6. Put on a brave smile

It takes courage to even put on a smile when either one of the party had lost a significant amount of cash during the collapse of the banks.

Learn how to get things done with a smile from these two reference articles:

Now not only you are able to put on a smile in the midst of this financial situation, you too have the skills to deal with the dues.

7. Just stop worrying!

Easier said than done! Okay, there are 5 simple steps that you can take to cut down on your worrying:

  • Create a checklist for the stuff that you are worrying about
  • Set a specific time of the day to worry about those items written in the checklist
  • Find solutions if possible
  • Clear off the checklist once you’ve went through every single bit of it
  • And stop thinking of those things again after discarding the checklist

There’s no point to thinking the same thoughts over again, especially with the ones that are related to your worries.

Worry a little bit every day and in a lifetime you will lose a couple of years. If something is wrong, fix it if you can. But train yourself not to worry. Worry never fixes anything. ~ Mary Hemingway

It is actually okay to worry especially when you are in a situation that doesn’t seem to be at your advantage in this season. It is also because of this feeling of worrying about tomorrow that gets you thinking about what you can do to make a change in your environment.

Use those 7 anti-worry hacks to help you get started once again, and I would love to hear your stories of success on how a change in focus from worrying to seeking out opportunities and coming out as tops.

Alright now. Let’s get our lives back on track with lesser worries but getting more things done and staying on course! Start adding on to this topic via the comments. See you there!

  • Daniel, great tips here. I think the limo/cab one threw me off a little though. How about riding your bike instead and not only save some money, but some resources. OK, maybe that's off topic. There are certainly a LOT of ways to keep your mind off this though.
  • Thanks Mike! 1st point was to inject a little humor to this entry. There's definitely lots more ways to get us not to worry about this season, and keeping to 7 allows us to absorb the points easier (while I will have lesser work to do too). :)
  • Eldwin Joshua
thanx for the nice and heartening article here. =)
  • You are welcome man! :D
  • Tamal Anwar
    Stumbled and Dugg!

Its a nice piece of article and its really a motivational one, well done Daniel, you must write more these type of articles. I wanna add one more thing too; If you are so much stressed with your daily life, take a little break and do something that doesn't requires to think, like playing with a ping pong ball -just to relax your mind.

And yes I liked the new Disqus comments system. I thin you lost your older comments :(
  • Haha. And after playing with the ping pong ball, I'd go write something like "101 creative things to do with a ping pong ball".

Looks like I've got a standard to maintain now. :)
  • Interesting and funny tips. But useful too.
  • Glad that you liked this post! :)
  • May be a little bit to much on cab thing, but as for the rest suggestion most of it I currently already doing.
  • It got your attention did it? :)
  • But sometimes human just like to worry. It's the level of consciousness of a individual that helps. If a person with lower consciousness, the activities will not really help. Only if someone who know how to control their mind and brain find those activities useful when they are stuck. My 2 cents though.
  • Take the lead by worrying less every single day. I believe that it takes one friend of someone who likes to worry too much to speak to the person's life to worry less and take a firm stand to improve in that area for change to happen.

It's not easy to stop worrying when it's become such an ingrained habit, but we have to start taking small steps to reach our goals. We can do this through suggestions like yours. My favorite is "start blogging." When we put ourselves out there we get a better understanding of who we are.
  • Heya Karl! Blogging helps a person to not live in denial, but to understand his own situation at that point of time while building up confidence that will get himself back on track, and probably find himself in a totally better job even in the midst of this financial crisis. You are right on with your comment about getting a better understanding of who we are as we put ourselves out there (in the blogosphere). :)
  • Great post! I especially like the self-employed section.......entrepreneurism is the key to freedom!
  • Or investing, selling, freelancing... etc. Oh wait, those can fall under the category of entrepreneurship. Haha
  • I think the last tip is the most valuable tips: Just Stop Worrying!!!
  • Saved the best for last! :D
  • Hello Daniel

Great advice, and I love the quote, worrying does not solve anything, only creates more problems - stress, anxiety, etc. Stumbled blogger buddy!
  • Worry does solve something... It helps to kill off time. But I sure hope that no one would ever want to be good in worrying. Right? :)
  • I love the cab idea (tongue in cheek)! This is a good reminder for me to use the local library – what a concept!
  • The library thing was taken right out from my personal experience. There was this period of 6 months where I literally lived every single school day in my polytechnic library, which was when I had developed a new-found interest in reading. Could say that I got used to many words that I never used before till recently, and it did help that the first time I got hold onto a book was from a shelve near my desk and it was from the Business / Management section. :)
  • Another great thing about blogging is the people you connect to. Who knows, maybe a fellow blogger works in your industry and can tip you off to a new job if yours is in danger. Blogging leads to social media leads to great networking opportunities.

    ~ Kristi
  • Heya Kristi! You've brought a new light to me in regards to blogging, social media, and networking! But one thing's for sure: all that helps to lead us to meeting more cool new people online. :)
  • A great light hearted article for those facing the credit crunch. There is always better things to do than worrying about whether we could keep our job intact. Right article at the right time daniel. Great work.

    Wei Liang
  • Thanks man! This article could go even further by helping to spread this out to more people who could do with some motivation and cheering up to live not in worry or fear. How bout that? :)
  • You are right. There is no point worrying excessively. It is best to channel our efforts into doing something productive while in between jobs.
  • Double agree with you on this Evelyn!
  • Great tips Daniel. We are not defeated until/unless we are defeated in out on minds. Isn't this a time of opportunity?
  • That's right Jennifer! I'm sure we ain't gonna get defeated in our minds regardless the situation right?
  • Great article, I like all of them except I am not taking a cab unless I am out drinking alone and want to be safe getting home. But the self employed one I like, I could get laided off today and still earn enough to survive with the knowledge I have to make money on the net.
  • Right on Larry! :)
  • Great article here :D
I'm actually living on point 1,3 and 4
  • Heya Johnson!

When you said point 1, you meant the taking cab part or by going for affordable expenses? :)
  • I think that point 5 is a particularly good one nowadays. I suspect that as so many companies have to cut advertising costs and find new ways to promote their products, people with expertise in web marketing could benefit greatly.

Actually, I suspect that jobs of the kind you describe could actually increase in number quite dramatically over the next year or so.
  • There's actually numerous jobs out there that seek freelance help. It's also a pretty good time to be equipped with the skills to get tasks done. Thanks for the comment Matt!
